Don't Get Defeated And Don't Give Up

Shawn and I decided to paint the upstairs of our home this last weekend. I think we would have gone mad had we not had our amazing friends to help. Thank you again to Caleigh, Dakota, and Carl. We painted for 13 hours straight, I still can't feel my fingers from gripping the handle so hard. We were able to paint our bedroom, our office space, foyer, and the two spare bedrooms.

Shawn and I bought our very first home almost a year ago, it will be a year in September. Before buying this home we both thought to ourselves we will never be able to buy a home until we are well past our 30's because we couldn't afford to put a down payment on a home. We both felt defeated because we knew we were ready for the next step in our relationship as far as wanting our own place to call home. Well one weekend my mom came down to visit and told us that if we were interested she would help us put a down payment on a home, that we would eventually just pay her back the money she had lent us. We were so ecstatic, we could not believe that we were finally going to buy something that was ours and that we wouldn't need to keep paying someone else's mortgage. So the hunt began, but it was awful, Shawn and I both disagreed a lot on what we wanted and what was in our price range. It was one of the biggest conflicts in our relationship because we both just felt like we couldn't come to a compromise especially because we weren't given a lot of money and the money that we were given was going to buy us a very small home that would need a lot of work, again, we felt defeated. Until one day we were driving through a neighborhood and found these homes that were being built and I thought to myself "well it doesn't hurt to try." Shawn told me I was crazy and that it would never work but that didn't stop me. I called them and sure enough they had one house left but everything was contingent upon your income. Thankfully we were not married at the time so we just went under Shawn's income and we wouldn't need my mom's money for a down payment because all you needed was a $1000 to put as a down payment. We are the very first people to ever live in this home. My whole point here is that a) Don't get defeated and don't give up. There were many times that Shawn and I felt like giving up and that maybe there just wasn't a home out there for us and until we finally started to enjoy house hunting we found the home of our dreams. b) Don't be afraid to take a risk. Shawn told me I was crazy to be calling this company because he didn't think we would qualify for this program but sure enough we did and it's because the company also cared a lot about us and wanted us to get into our home, and c) There are company's all over the place for first time home buyer programs that will help you get into your first home. Our company was called NeighborWorks. They were so accommodating and so empathetic I recommend them to everyone I talk to who are like Shawn and I that wanted to get into our first home but just couldn't afford it.

Shawn and I still have many projects we want to accomplish to our home and I'm sure I will post all of them but here are some before and after pictures of our bedroom.
