What Does Freedom Mean To You
Freedom, we've been raised to believe that a long time ago our ancestors fought for our freedom and today we should celebrate it every year on the fourth of July, but if we really think about it, what is freedom? Is freedom the ability to have free speech even though we are still criticized, is freedom the right for women to have jobs yet we are still paid less than a man, is freedom the right to get an education even though the costs of an education could buy someone a brand new home and it takes years to finally pay it off? Let's really all think about what freedom means to us. No, I'm not taking the glory away from the soldiers who have fought for our lives, I thank them everyday for the fight they have fought, I'm talking about the freedom that comes after that.
Freedom always comes with a price, are we really free if we are enslaved to our jobs? I now work an 8-5 job without the ability to take a lunch if I want to get paid the full hours. I have to scarf down my lunch in my car while I'm driving to my next client. How is that freedom? We have to work 250+ days in the year to only receive two weeks off for vacation, I also had to take two days out of my vacation time due to me being sick, now explain to me...how is that freedom? I'm now only allowed 8 days of vacation. We work hard, tireless hours to come home and be exhausted. Most of us don't cook anymore because it takes two incomes to provide for a family and by the time each spouse comes home we're all to damn tired to put in the effort, not to mention think about the individuals who may have a lengthy drive home from work. Ladies and gentleman is there really such thing as freedom? We put 8-9 hours a day in only to come home and do the same thing all over again the next day. That my friends is called insanity!
Now let me ask you again, what does freedom mean to you? Let's take more time to invest in our selves, family, friends, and in our happiness instead of the material things we idealize because we are working so hard to obtain.
With love,
Cierra
